1 of 5 Cool Tech Tools for Video

Do you have your students watch video? What do they do while they watch the video? How do you keep them engaged in the content, with you and their peers?

A 2011 report on Social Media for Teaching and Learning didn't include video when looking at faculty members' social media use because "video use is passive, not social".

So, how can we create activities where watching video shifts from passive to active? My next 4 posts will focus on free tech tools that will allow you to do just that.

The tool for today is videonot.es. This tool allows you to take notes on the screen while watching a video. You use any video online or upload your own. As soon as you start writing, the time is logged. When you click on the time, you are taken to that part of the video. Videonot.es is integrated with your Google Drive so you can easily save your notes and share with others.

Ideas for using with your class:

  • Have students use it as way for them to "actively watch" video and take notes
  • Annotate a video for your students, bringing their attention to key concepts or elements of the video
  • Ask your students to look for key elements in a video and note their findings as they watch, then share with you
  • Have students collaborate in their note taking by sharing their Google doc with each other

What other ideas do you have? Give it a try and let me know how it goes.
